Client Goals
Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust needed a fencing system which would prevent all public access to the bridge in order to avoid any risk of the bridge becoming overloaded at the end of large public events in a nearby park.
Darfen Solution
Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust is a Grade I listed structure in the city of Bristol which has attracted visitors from all over the world for almost 150 years. With popular nearby events regularly taking place, the trust needed to put in place a fencing system that would prevent crowds of pedestrians from using the bridge. Crowd prevention was required so that the bridge was not at risk of becoming unstable, and whilst this was very important, the trust also needed a fencing system that could be erected and taken down easily and quickly when required as to not incur lengthy bridge closures.
Darfen Steelhoard, a temporary hoarding system was supplied and installed at the bridge to block off the entrances. With a crowd loading of 5kn per metre and an anti-climb design the system proved an effective barrier. So that the trust could re-use the steel hoarding each time an event takes place. Darfen Hoardings (our temporary fencing specialist division) helped to design bespoke socket covers to conceal the excavated areas so that traffic could pass safely over the ground when the hoarding is not in use. All installed in one evening the Darfen Steelhoard product is a suitable form of pedestrian and crowd control barrier that can be used again and again.
